It's that time of year again. Snow, lots of food and being with friends and family. Yes it's almost christmas. Of course I have been very busy with other stuff (so busy that I haven't posted it here....) that I totally forgot to make a christmas card. But I am just in time. Only 30 minutes left but... It was Rico's birthday again and for this year I thought I would just buy him a six pack in stead of making another funny Mudhoen gift. But I couldn't help myself and made a Mudhoen Beer gift for him. A nice wooden case with 6 Mudhoen surprise beers. Which means, 6 different beers without anyway of knowing what kind of beer it is. :D I told him one of them is an alcohol free beer beer which made him pretty nervous.....

Grutte Pier

Here is the other thing Rico and I made for the design contest. It's an action figure of Grutte Pier. He's a well know historical figure in Fryslan. Just Google his name if you want to know more about him. He could chop off the heads of 7 men in one single stroke with his giant sword. Cool hu? Rico made the drawing (Kerat gave him the idea) and I spend to much time making the action figure. I told Rico I would punch him in the face if he would ever come up with another idea which involved me making an action figure. Anyway, we'll see if we win.... Little change of that but hey... got a cool action figure out of it. Rico and I are going to make a comicbook about Grutte Pier too. So keep a look out for that.

Magic Box

My little nephew Tygo has got some sort of obsession with keys. No idea why but it did give me an idea for his birthday present. I made him a little box that he can put his keys in (he was taking them from others, now he's got his own) which he can open and close with 3 different keys. Apparently he doesn't leave it out of his sight but I still haven't gotten any pics of him playing with it from his dad, so for now just the picts of the box itself.

New Stuff

It's been a bit quite again but not because I haven't been doing anything. I am bussy setting up my new bussiness but also have been finishing all sorts of projects. Couldn't show them though because they are a secret. :D Nah, it's just Rico and I made some stuff for a design competition and we couldn't show them before the submissions for the competition ended. And the other stuff, well I was a bit lazy. Not to show everthing all at ones I'll post it in different posts. Starting today with..... 'terp-knuffel' It's a little church on a hill as a cuddle toy. Rico came up with the idea, I kind of designed it in 3D and together with my mom I made it. Well, my mom did most of the work because she doesn't let me behind her sewing machine. The hand sewing is all done by me though. :D

Well, hello everybody. Things have changed the last couple of weeks (or months actually). I am hardly updating anymore. Why...? Because I have decided to quit with designing and building 2D and 3D 'art' stuff. Financially something had to change, because the way things were going I would have ended up living on the streets of Leeuwarden. :D So I tried some different things like starting Veteau Gallery with a buddy and some other stuff but in the end I had to make a radical change. I am going to start a new business restoring old cars. Or at least I am trying to. Yep, something totally different. Pretty scary fresh start, but I am really looking forward to getting everything of the ground. Now, I am not quitting cold turkey so I will be posting some stuff I am still finishing (Veteau will be going on for some time too) and some projects like Ronny will continue. So keep coming back.

Today 2 little robots I made of spare parts. I'll be selling them on the Veteau site in the near future.

Well, thought I'd try another one of those Photoshop paintings. Have been watching some old episodes of Space 1999 the last couple of days and in the leader it says 13th September 1999. That's when the moon drifts away from the earth. So I thought since it's been 10 years we've been without a moon..... :D I'd have a nice deadline to finish one before the 13th of September. It's Commander John Koenig, All done in photoshop with a A5 Wacom just like Lt. Elis. Right now i'ts just 5 minutes to midnight so I guess I just made it. Need to post this quickly though.....

Not sure if I ever showed the videoclip that we made of 'The Koekjes' but here it is. We feel it isn't quite done yet, it needs another verse and some dancing little groupie cookies so Rico decided to test the videoclip on his son Dimar. Well, turns out our target audience agrees with us. It rocks but it's over way to quick. That means we'll have to book some more time in the studio with our little cookie hero's. Here's the test video right after the break. :D

Build another little robot out of spare parts. But this time I thought I would combine it with the function of a lamp. Played around a bit with different ideas and decided to give him a lightbulb for a head. Of course there's already one very famous robot with a lightbulb for a head so there was now way it wouldn't resemble Gyro Gearloose's Little Helper. That's Willy Wortels Lampje, for you dutch readers. I could agree that he might look kind of like a Micheal Bay's Transformers version of Little Helper. I did however name him Illuminius so he's meant as an all together different character. Still, people sometimes call me a Willy Wortel so now I can say I at least have a Little Helper. He doesn't help out that much though..... I might still change a few things on him, but this is it for now. Hope you guys and girls like him, he's a nice fellow.

Tsjeard, one of my friends who I know for almost 20 years now, aksed me if I could design a little flyer for him. He lives in a sort of commune (not like hippies or anything like that) and almost every year they have a party in their garden. Which is almost smack in the middle of Leeuwarden. The parties are really cool, eventhough every year they've got a weird dresscode. This year the theme and dresscode is failed superhero. Tsjeard asked me if I could design a flyer for their party with Grover on it and this is what I made. My mom is on holiday right now but she was really looking eager to design a costume with me for that party when she heard about it. So I guess this year I will be a little more conforming to the dresscode. But who cares, the booze is free. Whoohoo, up up and away......

Yup, it's been a little bit quiet around here, I know. Been very bussy with the BS that's called my life. Am working on some projects and one big life-changer but for now very little to show. There was however a birthday. Kerat turned 33 and being the poor sod that I am I made a painting for him. Last year it was Homer, this year I made him a Bender. Pointing a his butt, you know (well, as long as you know futurama...) he's going to say: 'Kiss my Shiny Metal Ass'. Which in it self is a pretty good life motto.....

Edit: Just now looking at the picture I noticed his pointing hand looks a bit weird. Which I actaully though (and corrected) too about an hour before I gave it to Kerat. So this isn't even the finished version. Ha, funny.

Forgot to post this one. Done a few weeks back. Rico was actually finishing the sketches in the pub we go to, so Kerat and I helped him with the ending. Made me think of yesteryears, bit of our old school way of making gags. That's how a lot of Mudhoen gags where thought up. On the back of beer coasters while getting drunk to quick. We finished the sketches before we finished our first beer, luckily. Because Ronny is for kids, drunk we would of come up with an entirely different ending..... :D

When my little nephew turned one year old I gave him a painting for his birthday, just for fun to hang on the wall of his room when he grows up. And today his little sister turned one. So I couldn't just not give her one too. So I made this little painting for her. Hope she and her parents like it. Asked my mom to give it to my little niece because I stayed at home, feeling sick as a dog. I'll get the news later I guess... :D

Had some fun with some one else his idearrrr. On the volksrods forum a guy is building a pick-up with a T1 front called T2(?) busrod. Someone else mentioned putting a mid engined V8 in the bed and I just couldn't get that idea out of my head. So I drew it. And here it is. It's a split front and a pick-up bed, thats why I called it split-up. Not that I broke up with my girl, need to get one first for that to happen..... Anyway, it was fun to draw. Especially because it was finished way faster then the Lt. Ellis one.

Ones in a while I like to push the envelope regarding my skills and take on a project just to see how good I am or if I am able to do it. And one thing I have been really impressed with is how some people can make 'paintings' on there computer using photoshop and/or painter. I have 'painted' on the computer before using photoshop but never really to the extend that it was almost photorealistic. So while watching an episode of UFO (sci-fi series from 1970) I saw this really cool picture of Lt. Ellis which was a great image to use. I made a screen shot of her and then I went at it. I have heard some guys can make a painting like this in about 45 minutes (a little rougher but still) but I have been at it for ..... well... 10 hours more or less. At a certain moment I just had to call it finished because my hand started to hurt. My little A6 wacom isn't really the best gear for the job. There are still a few things that I am not happy with but all in all I have learned a great deal on how to do this and think I have done a decent job. For now I am done with this way of making a picture but maybe in a month or so I'll try another one. To try to get the time down and such... :D

It's been a little quite around my Honda XL project, but today there's an update. I had some problems finding a good rear rim so it took about 4 months to get something done. Anyway, the long story you can read here. Just wanted to show this picture because I think it looks so good. The next update on the bike will probably take a lot longer because of legal stuff... So for now I am just enjoying the little bastard as it's standing in the hall of my apartment.

The drawingboard had a character jam to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Batman's first appearance in Detective Comics issue 27 (May 1939) and I made a quick drawing of the cape crusader as if he was 70. Of course an open door gag but fun to do anyway. Hadn't drawn hardly anything for over a few weeks now. Time to get at it again....

Remember those little strips I made of superhero's like this one.... Well, I made a bunch of them, and we made a little booklet of them. It's the new Mudhoen and this saturday we will be selling them at 'Verhip een Stripfestival' at Vera in Groningen. Hope to see you there. Little note: Rico switched the colors from black and red or blue in red and blue. So no black outlines just red outlines with blue or the other way around. Gives it a nice/weird effect, just look at the cover.

Steampunk lamp no.3

Made another lamp. This one is made with a brass pipe from an air cilinder. The pipe is pretty banged up so the lamp actually looks like it's been trough some rough weather. Like it was on captain Nemo's Nautilus :D It's a 'one off' but I will make some variations on this design. This one can be yours for just 105 euro. Just email me at buy@art-oddities.com
On a nother note, yesterday I was having some beer with a friend of mine who makes daily paintings and we came up with the idea that I should make daily designs. Not sure if it will be possible for me to make a lamp (or robot or sculpture) a day, but it's an interesting idea. Maybe.....

I had this idea to make a video clip for one of our songs called 'koekjes' (cookies) where the song is performed by cookies. I've been tinkering on them for a while now and thought that it would be fun to show them here. Making the cookies is done but the mechanism to make them move isn't. I'm not sure on how I'm going to make that work. Got a few options.... But for now they are posing for the picture so they don't need to move :D

Leedvermaak doll

I've got this habit of giving my buddy Rico homemade toys for his birthday. Mostly Mudhoen toys. And when his son Dimar turned 1 year old (how time flies) I just couldn't resist the urge to make a Mudhoen toy for him too. I had already made a big Mudhoen fish for him when he was born and now it was time for a version of his dad's cartoon character Leedvermaak. Nothing to complicated like the muppet I made of Leedvermaak, this was just going to be a simple doll to play with. So off I went to my mom. :D She's got a sewing machine (which I am not allowed to play around with) and she is a seamstress. All the hand sewing I do myself, but the big straight lines she does, which is a big help. She's is always very happy when I come up with these small fiddly textile ideas... NOT! But it's always fun to work with my mother on something anyway. So thanx mom, for al the help. Well, after a few hours we ended up with this little doll of leedvermaak. Turned out pretty well if I say so myself. Dimar at first was more impressed with the wrapping paper then the doll (go figure) but it looks like he's now kicking the crap out of Leedvermaak. Way to go. Now what to come up with for next year......

I've been playing around with the idea of making lamps for quite some time, and now I finally made the time to build one. Or actually 2 (and maybe 3) This one is inspired by steampunk style. It's not unique, others have made lamps with pipe and couplers, but I had never done it and wanted to try it out. It looks really simple but it's actually more difficult then you would think, getting the wires trough and stuff was a real ordeal. But the most difficult thing was to make a decent photo of it.... Anyway, I think it came out quite nice, maybe I'll try a few more in this style. It was really fun to build.

Made some brackets for the headlight. Took a lot of time to make them (made the round part out of a massive bar of aluminium) but the headlight is on. Also re-spoked the front wheel (mocked) and costumized the axle. Just bought a rear wheel which should come in tommorow. Hopefully it kind of matches the front. Here are some picts. They look a bit atrsy fartsy because I'm having some issues with my camera.

Saw a pic on the Volksrod forum of a slammed KDF wagen and thought it would be funny to photoshop one too. So I took a look on google and found a nice pic of Prof. Dr. Ing h.c. Ferdinand Porsche with an old bug and I slammed it. Just for fun.

Does the welding ever stop....?

Had to take a look if the tank fitted with the engine in the frame and guess what... it didn't fit. That's what you get when you work on the 4th floor but weld in your garage box. So I needed to change the mounting brackets on the front. No biggy, just a few minutes of welding. And after that I put the front end in the frame. Needed to changes some parts on the lathe but now it al fits just fine. Next up is getting the front wheel out, which is more difficult then I had expected..... Meanwhile I'm still working on some drawings, but just wanted to take a break and give you this little update. It's starting to look like a mean little bike.

The holes on the front of the tank are just about 1cm off

Let's see. I'm working on some comic pages and one special drawing, but can't show them until it's time to show'm. Also did some work on my bug (not sure if I'm happy with it) and the tank for my honda is sealed. Had to make some changes on the frame, cutting, grinding and welding, and now it's time for paint. But with these temperatures I'm not sure if I'm going to start with that..... At least everything fits fine right now (I hope).

Nothing really interesting to show you. Sealing the tank is rather boring. And rather difficult with these kind of temperatures too, by the way. So I'll leave you with something else. It's the cover of a Leeuwarder pulp novel. The first one ever they say. Anyway, I made the drawing and Rico altered it a bit and did the layout. It really wasn't that much fun to do. Actually, no fun at all. I wont bore you with all the details about that but all I've got to say is, sometimes the simplest of things turn out to be really a lot of work. And no I did not trace the drawing from another one, just used it as an example. (one of the first reactions I got...duh)
btw. My site is updated and online. Not finished yet but most of it is viewable......Tons of work to see. Have a look if you don't believe me.... :D

Edit. The work on this one just got a little better. Won't say how much..... :D

Tank again

Oh dear, skipped a day. Anyway, there wasn't much to tell anyway. There still isn't but can't skip 2 days now can I...? Been working on the tank again, but it's not going that fast because you need to let the stuff dry completely. First I cleaned it with special marine clean, after it was dry I sprayed it with rust stop. Then I welded the tank together. Then I cleaned it again and sprayed it with rust stop again. I did it this way because when it's still apart you can check it better and also you don't need to use that much of the stuff when it's together. Cheapskate solution, I know, but it works for me. The funny thing is, you need to rinse the tank with water between every step. Kind of weird, getting rid of rust by cleaning it with water. Off course when you let it dry it rusts over immediately. They say the tank sealer sticks better to a light coat of rust.... We'll see if it's going to work I guess. Meanwhile I'm also working on my site. No, I am not watching my tank dry. :D

Been working on my website for a few weeks now, and slowly I'm making progress. It's rather tedious work sorting out pictures and thinking up little pieces of text to add. And since I'm not working on it in one go (I keep finding stuff to do I think is so much more fun to do) it takes like forever. But today I made a little drawing for the welcoming page which was kind of inspiring. The page was rather boring being all empty and stuff and I thought it needed a picture of some sort that would explain just what I do. Well, it does show a few things but is far from telling it all. Still I like it. It looks a little bit like a tattoo and is actually a little bit silly and scary at the same time. Hmmm, maybe it says more about me then about my work. Anyway, this is todays update.

So it looks like I'm trying to post one update a day. No idea how long I can keep that up, with the holidays coming and all, but we'll see. Anyway, this time not a superhero gag but just something I did today. Remember the honda 250 xl project. Well, I thought it was about time to put the new fuel cap in the old tank. First I needed to cut a big hole in the tank. The hole saw wasn't up for the task so I needed to drill about 50 little holes. Pffff. Took the speedo ring from my beetle dash, put a plate in it and welded it al up. Which was rather difficult in the end because it got dark.... Still, my chinese racing fuel cap fits just fine in it. Looks a little bit odd but thats just what I'm aiming for, right. :D Hopefully I can weld everything together on friday. And then bondo I guess.....

Sometimes you work on something that just doesn't want to go the way you want it to go. To the point that you get so pissed off you just want to chuck the stupid thing out of the window. So a few days ago I was painting my Honda xl frame which totally failed and seeing as I life on the 4th floor I decided to just take a step back and chill. Which most of the time results in me having a few to many beers with my friends, nurturing a decent hangover and after that going through some old unfinished projects. Just like I did this weekend. After kind of destroying an old computer (it wasn't my week) I stumbled on an old little robot walker. I had already made the gearbox but the engine was far to weak to power it. So I put an old 220v motor in it and dressed it up with some old parts and cutlery I had lying around and voila. It walks really really slowly so it's almost hypnotically relaxing. To the point that it made me to start sanding down my frame (again). Fun and easy build, something I really need now and again.

Here are 2 drawings of some crazy design ideas. They had this topic on the KCW forum about bad... err awesome car ideas and I went trough some of my old sketches to see if had some myself. Well I had quit a few and I decided to work 2 of them out. The V12 Karmann Ghia is kind of what is says it is. A big V12 engine from a Ferrari or Lamborghini in a KG with a nice big 'look at my engine' back window. The second is an even bigger engine (a v8 from a tank or something) installed on top of the gearbox and all that crammed in the back of an old bug. I don't think it's even drivable, but it sure looks impressive. I'll do a few more soon, because I've got enough ideas, but for now I've got other stuff to do.

I think it's really interesting that you can make something look like something with just a few dubs of paint. I usually like to blend everything till it's smooth and then outline it but I thought I'd have a go at painting in a heavier touch. It does kind of work but to me it feels like it isn't finished yet. However, I'll have a few go's at it in the future because I still find it fascinating.
The picture itself. Well, somehow while growing up I have made this weird connection between a waiter and frog legs. And that those waiters are kind of stuck up. It's a classic joke for cartoons. 'Waiter, do you've got frog legs. No, it's just the way I walk.' This picture came to me while doodling and resembles just that. A stuck-up waiter with frog legs.

Last saturday it was Rico's birthday, so i figured since I gave Kerat a painting as a present why not give Rico one too. Rico, for some reason really likes those hideous 'gypsy boy with tear' paintings, so I made him a painting with Mudhoen with a tear on it. He liked it.

Made another painting, to see if that 'making a painting a day' thing is going to work. My magic eightball says: Very doubtful. I kind of agree. To much other stuff going on, but maybe 2 or 3 paintings a week is going to work. I've got a few unfinished ones lying around that I want to finish and then I'll try to sell them. As soon as I get my site finished I'll probably put them on ebay at a starting price of 99 dollar. So hang around.....
About the painting... well, it's a girl... with an interesting nose. Not based on anyone in particular but I was watching criminal minds while sketching, that's all I'm saying. :D

Yes, making new friends is easy. You take a needle a thread and a lot of perseverance, and oh yeah, a mom who won't let you touch here sowing machine (so thanx for the help mom :D) and there is your buddy for life. Or until the seams let loose. The plan is to use this guy for a video clip, but for now he's just checking out the internet and finding out how the webcam works.

A buddy of mine got a year older again so I made him a painting as a birthday gift. He's a painter himself and a huge simpsons fan. So I thought he might like the idea. Well he did like it, or at least he said he did about 4 times :D Funny thing is the painting should have been called 'Hmmm, donut...' but I was hungry when I wrote the title on the back and accidentally made the donut a plural.... As if Homer would share....

Bike project

Remember the Superzuki? Well, it didn't happen. The bike was already sold. Ooooh. Yup, so I got a Honda instead. :D That's right. My dad asked me on the phone if I was interested in a Honda and 3 days later I owned one. He got it in a deal with another bike. It's a small 250 XL and I guess it's a 1976 model. So thanx dad.

At the moment I'm working on the 1302 so the bike project is on hold but I made some drawings to have an idea on what I want to do with it. I'm probably going for something like the green one, kind off. But still playing with the designs. The black one is just for fun, but its a good reverence on how bobbers look. Can't wait to start on it.

Just a quickie, measurements aren't confirmed....

A few posts ago I showed you guys some caricatures I did of non-existing people. My big (step) brother saw them and asked me if I could make one of him too. Well, luckily his birthday was coming up so I decided to make a caricature of him as a birthday gift. And this is it. I wanted to hone my photoshop skills as well, so no pencils on this one. In the end I kind of ran out of time so I think it's not quit finished yet (it needs more contrast) but his girlfriend laughed her ass of so I guess it looks close enough.... :D

So what do you do if the bug you're working on takes ages and you get other design ideas and you don't have enough space for a second project.... you make a model. Or at least, that's what I did. I had an old model of a '67 beetle lying around in parts which I customized into a volksrod. No way you can get one of these to drive legally in the Netherlands but in some American states it's allowed. So unless I move to the states, this is about as cool as it gets for me with one of these rides. Maybe I'll do a model of a pick-up next.... until I get to make that one for real :D

But I did make some new stuff, so let's update it. Here's a Gulf tribute bike. Biker build off is on so I'm going to watch that. But more updates tomorrow.

Ah well, seeing as it's finished anyway (accept for text check) here's part 3 of 'Slag om Leeuwarden'. After they get stenciled we're going to design a nice box for it, so you can buy the 3 parts as a boxed set. We're playing with ideas for a 3 part prologue and a 3 part epilogue because they're just so much fun to do.

Wow, no updates for quite some time now. Hmmm, well lets see. Made some comic-strips for a company called ecostream. There being placed in a belgian newspaper this week. 1 every day. Was a lot of fun to do too. Did some work on my beetle and some boring dtp stuff and finished my part for the next mudhoen (part 3 that is) Not much to show though... Hopefully some interesting picts soon.

Yes, it's here at last. The new Mudhoen. Technically it's issue #22 but since it's no longer a magazine but a one story comic we kind of let the numbering go. Therefor this is part 1 of a 3 parts story. Hmmm.... Anyway, not to blow my own horn, but it really looks great. I'm seriously very happy with it. If you want to buy one check the Mudhoen site for more info. Rico and I are already working hard on parts 2 and 3. So, more to come soon.
